Web Developer Versus Designer

If you are looking to re-do your website (and trust me, most of you should), you need to know the difference between a web developer and a web designer.

A web developer usually does coding and builds a site from the ground up. This is more than just CSS coding. Developers build web properties specifically for client specifications. So if you want someone to program your website, add forums, plug-ins and what-have-you, a web developer is for you.

If you just want a website made based on Wordpress or the like, then you want to hire a designer.

You need to think about some things first:

  • What is the website for? Static brochure or sales tool?
  • What do you want visitors to do?
  • How many services are you going to jam on the website?
  • How many items per menu? (Did you know there is a math formula for that?)
Remember the 8 second rule. In 8 seconds, the website and all plug-ins have to load plus the content (above the fold) has to be relevant to the person visiting or people bounce. (More on landing pages in the future.)
