What Does That List Mean?
On Rad's Radar
Wednesday, 12 January 2011 08:55

There are always lists. Everybody comes up with Top 10, Top 5, Best of, blah, blah, blah. What does the list actually mean though?

For years I have heard about the JD Power awards, but have no idea what the criteria for winning one is. I know they survey people, but I have never been surveyed. How many do they talk to? Is it even enough of a cross-section to be statistically valid? We have 330 million people in the US, talking to 300 is insignificant for a mass market. Just saying.

ABI Research released the North American Hosted VoIP and Unified Communications Service Providers Matrix. (Yeah. That's what I said.) "This Matrix evaluates these service providers on the basis of "Innovation" and "Implementation" as a means of providing an impartial assessment of the service provider landscape from the standpoint of technological prowess and business execution."

So did they look at at least 10% of the 1100 VoIP Providers in the US? Probably not. The Top 10 is interesting. VZ is # 1 due to global reach in both UC and VoIP. We were scratching our heads because the 2 Bells on this list are the hardest carriers to work with - and both Bells have sent out notices that FOC dates don't mean anything right now. So Implementation? And Innovation? In what way is VZ innovative? FiOS maybe. So they were picked due to FiOS VoIP Phone service, a straight POTS replacement? Huh?

The other Bell, Ma, 5th. No idea why since they scrapped CallVantage. Now its the wholesale AVOICS or enterprise DNA. Again Implementation and Innovation? Really?

I can see NGT even though they were bought by Comcast a while go. I can even see SmoothStone, 8×8 and Cox. Alteva has uniquely positioned themselves with Microsoft Linc, so I can see that as a nod. Yet, no M5, even though Cypress gets a nod? Unless it is innovation for using Nortel C4 as your switch. Thinking Phone Networks and Broadview Networks were surprises because you don't see that much press about them.

To me, it's just a list, or more precisely, someone's opinion.

So at CVX @ITEXPO on Thursday, Feb. 3rd at 3:15 PM I will be presenting about the need for Net-Heads in the Channel again. (It was originally presented at CVX at ITEXPO East in LA in October of 2010.) The session is titled, "Crossing the Channel Chasm". Please come listen.

So you have some background on the Net-Head concept of mine, download this free e-book that collects all of my writings on this TMC blog and in Internet Telephony magazine in one quick, short read.

The Net-Head e-book by Peter Radizeski

I've been doing a lot of writing and speaking in the last 5 weeks, especially about Selling. The one point I am trying to emphasize is that you are NOT selling pipe. You are selling What Customers Do With That Pipe!

A couple of my clients have some cool Wireless Projects that they are working on. When I am brainstorming with them, it is always on What Are the Possibilities? With Wireless and IP they are boundless. The bundles and add-ons and value are too numerous. SIP trunking has a good amount of Upsell that most carriers and Agents miss or ignore. T1 has hardly any upsell. But that is why Cloud is so loud. Apps are all about What You Do With the Pipe, not the pipe. Net-Head thinking. Come listen!

Proceed With Coupon Caution

Groupon logo.

Rich Tehrani points out that Groupon may not be the best friend for small businesses because it attracts the least valuable customer.

My pal uses Groupon and others to drive traffic. His costs cover the coupon and profit. He hopes for return visits to really make up the profit. Who doesn't, right?

What if you are training your customers to be like rats with cheese? What if they only shop at your shop when they get a coupon? Then they use a competitor coupon for their next fix. Loyalty is gone.

Well, did you have loyalty before?

There are ways to proceed with coupon caution. Use the coupon to get likes on your Facebook page where you can interact with them.

Use the coupon to get them to follow you on twitter - the only place that you will coupon again in this quarter.

Use the coupon to get their email address and their birthday to be able to offer them a birthday coupon as well as taylored specials through out the year. This takes some work, but this is how you build a tribe. And Tribes mean loyal customers.

Loyalty programs kind of work. Store owners could launch their own rewards or loyalty program to get repeat customers.

It's true the cooupon clippers are looking for a freebie, but the coupon was to get them to try it, get traffic. The small business owner's job is what do you do next? Be a little creative and build a Tribe. (Thanks Seth Godin).

Rumor: VZW iPhone

Steve Jobs shows off iPhone 4 at the 2010 Worl...

Image via Wikipedia

Twitter is all abuzz about the special announcement tomorrow by VZW in NYC. Dan York says that he can't see Steve Jobs letting VZW have the lead on this story. I agree. Everyone is certain that the iPhone will be out on Verizon's xG network by the end of 1Q2011. I wonder what that will do to the $8 per month per phone that Ma Bell pays Apple. Will it stop with the exclusivity?

Then there are the polls about will you swtich from Ma Bell to Pa Bell. Psst! If you switch, you have to buy a new phone. The current iPhone is GSM and HSPA+ which supposedly barely works on Ma Bell's network and can work on T-Mobile's limited network, but cannot work on VZW. Different protocol. Different radios. Different spectrum. So not only will you pay ETF (early termination fees) you will have to buy a new device. That's expensive.

Now in further rumor-ville, Syniverse is hiring a group that will just be porting landline numbers to cellular numbers for VZW. Interesting?

So if Pa Bell gets the Apple phone this quarter, will there be a promotion to get folks to cut the landline?? Seems crazy.
