Managing Remote Workers

Many managers do not get training on management. It is one thing to manage workers you can talk with face to face. It is a whole other thing to manage workers remotely.

It involves Trust, Communication, Expectations, Accountability and Obstacle Removal.

The best managers understand that their main job is to remove obstacles so people can just do their jobs. That’s hard to do if the manager (A) does not really know what his employees do; and (B) does not have an open dialogue with the team.

Trust is about letting your people perform. It comes from Hiring Well, on-boarding, setting expectations and over-communicating.

We have so many tools for communicating: texts, email, voice calls, video calls, conferencing, collaboration tools — so why is it so hard to communicate with your team and manage them? Because it takes work. And you have to set aside pettiness, bias, and your own selfishness to do it.

There are tools to track progress. There are tools to track activity (and undermine privacy).

Really though, if you communicate the expectations clearly and concisely, things do get done. It is when expectations are not set nor are they clearly communicated do things fall apart. It is always about Communications. Despite all the tools we have to communicate, people still have a challenge being clear and concise – especially clear.

In the end, managers need to set clear expectations, communicate regularly, ask good questions, remove obstacles and trust the employees.

Tips for managing remote workers (from RNG) (from BambooHR)

GapingVoid writes: “Remote working tends to shift the emphasis from verbal communication to written communication. As handy as Skype and Zoom are, nobody wants to spend six hours a day on them. Be ready and act accordingly.”

“Culture happens in the spaces between people,” Mark Earls. It takes extra effort to maintain Culture remotely. Remember that Culture is every action – who you hire, who you promote. Act accordingly.

What’s Selling Right Now?

Bookmark this page and visit often. I will be updating it with info as it arrives. Send me your info – what you are selling or what you are offering that customers are interested in – peter at 4isps.com It is a work in process.

With all the free UC&C and Zoom freebie trials and such, partners must be wondering what can they sell right now.

I am going to highlight some product offerings that might sell for you right now.

With all of the Work from Home people trying to access corporate networks, software and databases, cyber-security is needed. Hacks, phishing and malware are on the upswing. And the bad guys are getting smarter and better at it every day. (They are even changing the DNS on your home router to send you to sites that they mirrored and used against you!)

So WFH employees need security. End-point management is one service to offer.

A popular solution for HIPAA compliance is DaaS (desktop as a service or VDI, virtual desktop).

Also, since SD-WAN is so hot. AireSpring has a platinum service that allows for a Velocloud CPE to drop ship to the end user at home so that the network admin of the company can manage and have some visibility into remote workers endpoints.

MSP and master agency Acuity in Tampa, offers mobility endpoint management. They can also manage Win10 builds. According to CEO Josh Anderson, “they are starting to see Samsung DEX stuff to turn Samsung devices into purpose-build PC’s (think Chrome OS type of laptops).”

With Zoom’s security and privacy issues spotlit in the news, Northeast schools are banning Zoom in favor of Microsoft Teams. There are many vendors for MS Teams (formerly Office365).

TPx offers Managed Office365 with MCSE migration support. Special offers available during the current crisis.

MSP and master agency, Acuity (out of Tampa) also offers Microsoft Teams, management, install and SIP Trunking for voice enablement & direct routing.

I am going to be Hosting a webinar on April 16th with AireSpring on the State of the Channel and what is selling now. Mark it on your calendars.

Selling Remotely (a workshop)

“Remote Selling is not Tele-Marketing”

In today’s environment, how do you sell virtually? Remote selling is something I have been doing since 1999 – long before video conferencing, white-boarding and other collaboration tools that ubiquitous broadband has enabled.

As a Trusted Advisor, how do you sell without a handshake?

This workshop will be over the course of 4 weeks. It will be live, but recorded for your viewing on-demand. Each session is 20 minutes plus Q&A and a quiz via Survey Monkey.

  • Week 1 – Prospecting & Establishing Trust
  • Week 2 – Follow up Intelligently
  • Week 3 – Discovery I
  • Week 4 – Discovery II
  • Week 5 – Role Play

A Slack group will be established for additional Q&A and
networking with your peers!

All
this for $69 per person (5 for $299!) Can be retaken by video as often as you
like.

Paid Workshop attendees will also receive a copy of my book, SELLECOM2: Selling Cloud Services, in kindle form!

Why 20 minutes? Not everyone can sit for an hour and absorb the necessary information. Letting parts of this settle before then piece allows the attendee to put this knowledge in to practice a step at a time. Role-playing is the best way to demonstrate learning and to be coached for improvement. The quizzes are to emphasize the important points of the session.
