The First Fax Machine

What did the guy do with the first fax machine? Who did he fax?

He probably told everyone he had one because it was the latest and greatest, a status symbol. That was part of what the fax (and tele-type) was sold as – a status symbol, luxury good, latest gadget.

Let’s go back to the first fax. Let’s remember that when we talk about fiber, copper, wireless, MPLS, gigabit and other inside telecom terms, no one gives a hoot! No one!

Would you talk about MPLS or the benefits of fiber over dinner? NO!

It is WHAT people do with it.

On the end of the Gigabit fiber broadband circuit is a kid trying to play Xbox with his friends; a mother doing her college homework; a dad trying to find a job or navigate the government website for application forms for assistance.

On the other end of that desk phone, who is it? Why are they talking?

Stop selling products. Sell what they can do with them.

    The M&A Train Rolls Along

In the UCaaS space, “Fusion has completed the acquisition of the intellectual property and assets of Technology for Business Corporation (TFB), a provider of contact center solutions,” reports Channel Vision magazine.

In a different kind of merger, Genuity Networks in New Hampshire is merging two diverse broadband sources together. It is “based on technology from Mushroom Networks that enables the company to bond together landline or wireless connections from multiple network operators to create a single higher-speed and more reliable connection,” reports Telecompetitor.

CenturyLink acquires netAura, an IT security services firm that specializes in engineering, developing and consulting on managed security technologies. This gives them some cyber-security and security information and event management (SIEM) expertise.

Zayo nabs 2 data centers for $18.9 million in its acquisition of Clearview International LLC. That is 30,000 more square feet in Texas for zColo – in Dallas and Waco.

Meanwhile, CyrusOne is spending $22M to build another data center in San Antonio.

In addition, “CyrusOne quietly pulled off one of the biggest data center deals of the year, sale-leaseback of the CME Group 428,000 square foot Globex data center, outside of Chicago.”

“Global data center solutions provider CyrusOne, Inc. (NASDAQ:CONE) announced today that it has closed the previously announced acquisition of a suburban Chicago data center in Aurora, Ill., from CME Group. This transaction expands CyrusOne’s existing portfolio of more than 30 data centers across the US and overseas and provides customers involved in the global financial markets with connectivity and proximity to the CME Globex platform.” [source]

Wait! There’s more data center news!

Carter Validus Mission Critical REIT II, Inc. (“CVMC REIT II”) announced the acquisition of data center properties totaling approximately $24.2 million in aggregate purchase price. (1) CVMC REIT II acquired the Alpharetta Data Center III property (“ADC III”) on February 2, 2016 for approximately $15,750,000. ADC III is a 77k sf Tier III data center ihat is 100% leased to Sungard Availability Services, LP. (nice to have a long term tenant for the REIT).

    (2) CVMC REIT II purchased the Flint Data Center on February 2, 2016 for about $8.5M.
The Flint (Michigan) Data Center property is 100% leased to Online Tech, LLC. [source]

Data centers are still hot due to cloud services ballooning. Also, it is easy investment for many because as a REIT (Real estate investment trust), it looks, tastes and smells like real estate. RE is the number one preferred asset for the wealthy.

    SD-WAN Coming Soon!

The latest buzzword to hit the industry is SD-WAN. It comes out of the SDN, software defined network. Many carriers have implemented it — and more are on the way. April is SD-WAN month here on the blog. (No joke!) I have a series of podcasts (short, like 10 minutes) set up to share that will help explain what is SD-WAN;; why should a channel partner care; why should a customer care; who is buying it and why.

If you have seen Aryaka around the trade show circuit, you might have seen that they use a plethora of acronyms to define their service – SD-WAN, WAN Optimization, VPLS and analytics. We will get to the bottom of that in the coming month.

You might also have seen the news about Zayo rolling out FLEXCONNECT, which is dynamic bandwidth powered by SDN. TW Telecom had that prior to the Level3 acquisition. Basically, deliver a 1GB pipe to a customer who is buying 100MB of bandwidth. The customer can turn it up to a full Gig through a customer portal when demand increases. They pay for the extra that they use. Why would they need extra bandwidth on-demand? Product launch, full data backup, server replication, database replication and March Madness viewing from the office!

This is just a small example of how SDN is affecting the WAN.

Other service providers will chime in. I look forward to it. Stay tuned!

Frontier Takes Over in Tampa (Cluster)

So folks in Tampa Bay woke up to no bars on AT&T cellular service. Hmmm… is it because AT&T back-hauled some towers or small cell sites with Verizon FiOS perhaps?

Verizon FiOS business customers scattered throughout the Tampa Bay area this morning are without service as the IP Address re-numbering begins. According to this Frontier website, it will take 2 years!

According to my source, it looks like VZ turned off IP address blocks that they were still using in VZB or VZE (old MCI address pools). This caused outages on FiOS and then rolled over to cell towers that use those FiOS links. It is NOT everyone. It is just those with these IP address blocks.

Also, the static IP customers are experiencing problems on VZ FiOS because again those IP addresses belong to (and are staying with) Verizon.

An internal memo at Frontier says that it will take UP TO 2 WEEKS to fix!

I guess Frontier learned nothing from the last VZ take-over or its latest debacle in CT when it took over SNET CT from AT&T. In Connecticut, it lost significant market share due to this mess. Poor communication, poor engineering, poor management and honestly just irresponsible.

The funny thing is — no, not that today is April Fool’s Day — but that Frontier already issued rate increase orders (see HERE). So plenty of time to let the states know that rates would increase 17 days after they took over, 17 days after the mess they created.

Residential POTS is going up $1 per line and Biz POTS is going up $0.34 to $2 per line. Have to pay back that $10 Billion somehow! And they knew that they would be pissing off customers almost immediately, so loss of revenue and customers from Day 1 (today).

The only thing that will save them in Tampa Bay is that Charter is taking over Bright House later this year.

No idea how an ILEC can screw up over and over again AND not get sued, fined or beaten in the marketplace!
